If you own a Variax guitar, which is a pretty nice product in itself, Workbench is a must-have. I found it easy to install (and update), and even easier to use. More importantly, it multiplied exponentially the things I can do with my Variax. Macintosh users need to have OS 10.3.8 or higher and a 400MHz or faster G4 or G5. Those with Vetta II amplifiers or Pod XT Live processors can use these to connect to the computer via USB, in which case the Variax Workbench software can be downloaded free of charge from the Line 6 web site. If you don't have one of these devices, you'll also. The only problem with the new workbench is that when you open a bundle, it's on the same window of the existing models of your variax. It makes it hard to do comparisons and to choose which model to import where. Here we are in tweak heaven! Why? Because most of the guitar bodies in the current Variax 500 and 700 electric guitars are present in the Variax Workbench. If you're not familiar with them, here they are in this document

Integration with Custom Tone

Line 6 is in the process of developing Variax Workbench, the first version of which will NOT be supported by the online tone library. Line 6 incorporated support for Variax in the online library..

and for those with Vetta II and future connectivity..

Variax Workbench 1.0 will require the Variax being edited to be connected to the Variax USB Interface supplied with the Workbench package, using the digital connection cable also included in the Workbench package. While editing, you'll be able to connect the Variax 1/4-inch jack to an amp, POD, etc. to hear the changes you're making. (People who own both a Variax and a Vetta II or POD xt Live could buy Variax Workbench, hook up the Variax digital connection to the Variax USB Interface, and the Variax 1/4 connection to their Vetta II or POd xt Live, and thus be able to have a Variax-Vetta II experience while editing the guitar.)

Variax Workbench 1.1 will allow a Vetta II and MIDI interface to be substituted for the Variax USB Interface, and this software will be a free download for all Vetta II/Variax owners. We will begin to work on this software as soon as Variax 1.0 is released to manufacturing.

Line 6 does not yet have a firm schedule, as Line 6 has to also coordinate planning with a Vetta II firmware update to make all this possible, but Line 6 expect it will be possible to complete this update within three months after shipping Variax Workbench 1.0. In addition to enabling the Vetta II, PODxt Live to serve as a Variax interface for Workbench, the Vetta II update will also allow Vetta II presets to include model select and tone setting information for Variax Acoustic just as they currently include that info for Variax 500/700 today.

Vetta II or Variax Workbench owners who want to know when Variax Workbench 1.1 will be ready should be sure to use the LIne 6 online registration form to register, providing their email address. Line 6 will email all registered Vetta II and Variax Workbench owners once we have a firm schedule for this release, or to announce its availability for download. If Line 6 haven't sent out this email, it means there is no more information available, so please do not post new messages everyday asking for a schedule update. :-)

Line 6 also plans to extend the Custom Tone library to add support for Variax Workbench, but this will not be part of the 1.0 release, and may not be part of the 1.1 release either. Ultimately, Line 6 expects the online library to provide an exchange for Vetta II Tones, Variax Workbench-customized Models, and pairings of Vetta II Tones with Variax Workbench-customized guitars.

Again, Line 6 are not able to commit to a schedule at this time for any of these features (except for the Vetta II Tone exchange which is already online), but Line 6 will email all registered Vetta II owners, Variax Workbench owners and Line 6 Edit downloaders as soon as Line 6 DOES have information to provide. So please be sure to register, and know that until Line 6 has emailed to give your more news, there isn't any more information on schedule that we can provide.

With the newly released POD xt Live (with Variax connectivity) Line 6 stated that the Workbench will be available as a free download for both Vetta and XT Live owners.

System overload?

So that you don't overload when the great new workbench becomes available in this summer make sure you've met the requirements:

Computer System Requirements You will need to have a Variax™ 500 or 700 guitar and a Windows XP®, Windows ME®, 2000 or 98SE PC with at least a Pentium® II 400 MHz or better processor, one available USB port, and 128MB or more of RAM. Mac® users need to have OS X 10.2 or higher and at least a G4 with 400 MHz or better. You will also need an amplifier available to plug the 1/4” audio cable into to hear the results of customization.

A Variax Workbench Web Show perhaps?. It'll give you a bit more info in a compact way. When you use the link you should go down the then opened page and click on 'outline' in bottom on the left. Then go the slide buttons in the bottom center to view the different slides. Enjoy..

A demo of the Variax Workbench was taped for you to 'witness' this new chapter Line 6 opened up for us guitarists. As before be aware of the poor sound quality, remember this is taken live during exhabition with no direct plugging into a board. Surrounding sounds and people talking are just taken in. Variax Workbench update.. 08-02-05

Sorry for the delay, but we’d rather it be right than on time, for all of our sakes. When we started working on it we discovered some things in the basic Variax software architecture that would have to be changed for the combination of the guitar and software program to work the way they should, so a good deal of the time has been revisiting just what Variax does at its most basic level to make sure the Workbench would be able to give you the power and flexibility that you want.

To a certain extent, Variax itself has been rebuilt from the ground up (at least on a software level), which means a whole separate level of testing and verification beyond just what the Workbench software does. The upside of this is that things will work better - the downside is that it takes more time. We’re just starting to go into the final testing stages, so there is light at the end of a tunnel that ended up being somewhat longer than we had expected or hoped.

You'll have to update Variax software to use Workbench, but that would have happened anyway. As to release dates, etc. there's no saying yet, but at least the end of the development cycle is in sight.

Workbench initial release will support V500, V700 Electric, and V300. Acoustic and bass support are somewhere down the line. There's not much chance of electric models on acoustic (or vice versa).

This video teaser was not necessarily created for online streaming, so I suggest you (right-click and save-target-as) download the video to your hard drive. I was able to keep the video quality very good, while keeping the file size just a little over 5MB..so it's a small download.
And for those who happen to be curious about such things, yes, that is my voice doing the narration. And the background song is one I literally made up on the spot and recorded in a few simple takes..it's nothing fancy, but it has a good groove to it.

Workbench is Shipping.. 20-04-05

The Variax Workbench package has left the building at Line 6. It'll take some days to get it to the retailers. Variax Workbench will work with Variax 300, 500 and 700 electrics.

A software only version will be available at a later date for Vetta II and PODxt Live owners.The downloadable version for XT Live users is not up for download and won't be for a few days yet, probably next week is the best guess, as it is still in the final testing stages.

Vetta II support is a bit further away, as the current Vetta II firmware won't support it, and will take a whole other testing iteration, most likely several testing iterations. For those of you who want to use the package with Vetta: It simply won't work with the version of software that's in the retail package. Workbench won't see your Variax plugged in through your Vetta.

Vetta V2.50 - Variax and Workbench.. 26-05-06

With the previous (2.03) Vetta software, the Vetta was only aware of, and you could only recall, guitars from the factory settings, so your alternate tuned hybrid ES-175 with sitar pickups can't be stored as part of a Vetta patch. The behavior you'll see is this: store a modified guitar at Spank-5, for example. If you had a Vetta patch that uses Spank-5, what would come up is the original factory guitar, not your custom model. Until Vetta is updated to V 2.50, it won't know anything about user memory on the Variax.

The good side of this (and this applies to XT Live owners as well) is that you actually have 110 guitars available when you're connected via the VDI, the 50 factory settings, 10 in the custom banks, and 50 user settings that get stored in what would have been the factory slots. You can specify which of those each patch on the Vetta or XT Live will bring up. This is as close as I've ever gotten to having my cake and eating it, too.

With Vetta V 2.50 (and PODxt Live) the situation is like this.

1. The factory banks are there purely for a reset function but are asignable via Line 6 edit to a Vetta II patch.

2. The user banks are permanently allocated to the location accessable by the Variax's controls or the Vetta's control buttons.

3. If I asign a new patch to say Lester 1, the only way to get access to the original Lester 1 patch (factory) is by having pre-programmed it into a Vetta II patch via Line 6 edit yes? I can't access it via controls on the Variax or Vetta II?

4. If I have use a different Variax, the patch in the Vetta II would reference the memory slot and the sound would be whatever is in that location. So for continuity the two Variaxes should have identicle patches stored yes?
